Joe Thomas turns to stand-up
Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas is to become a stand-up comedian.
The actor will make his debut at an online work-in-progress gig as part of the Leicester Comedy Festival on Saturday night.
Thomas started in comedy by performing sketches as part of the Cambridge Footlights student troupe, alongside future Inbetweeners co-star Simon Bird and fellow comic Jonny Sweet, who would go on to win the best newcomer award at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe.
The three of them formed a sketch team called House Of Windsor - who collectively created the 2013 Sky comedy Chickens – while Thomas and Sweet performed as double-act for a while.
His break came as Simon Cooper in the Inbetweeners in 2008, and he subsequently had starring roles in Fresh Meat, White Gold and the 2018 movie The Festival, before taking part in the eighth series of Taskmaster in 2019.
However, his streaming show – entitled Trying Not To Panic – will be his first attempt at solo stand-up.
He is sharing an hour with established comic Sean McLoughlin, whose blurb says he ‘was once a jetsetter performing stand-up all over the world but now he’s stranded in his spare bedroom eating biscuits and wondering if his whole career was just a dream.’
Tickets for the Zoom gig are available from the Leicester Comedy Festival.
