The 5: Myq Kaplan’s Top 5 “Best New Artist” Winners Named Bob, Approximately

Myq Kaplan’s new album, A.K.A. is a smash hit. Before that it was a critically acclaimed show at Edinburgh Fringe and is full of an optimism and kindness the world really needs right now. The “17-track comedy album about truth, love, and not murdering, guaranteed to appeal to all the not-murdering enthusiasts out there. And he’s hoping that Grammy voter are among that group because he’s submitted the album for Grammy®-nomination consideration after garnering immense critical acclaim around its late Spring release on Blonde Medicine.

In A.K.A., Myq takes you, the listener, and himself, and the universe, all of which are one entity, on a journey of kindness, from challenges like love, death, and bathrooms, through controversial topics like religion, politics, and Nickelback, into a spiritual land of ayahuasca, peace, and Kanye West, down the rabbit hole past all the turtles and back up again, covering everything there is, forwards and backwards and otherwise.

He’s been on literally every late night show doing standup, he’s a touring headliner all across the US and beyond. And so in honor of his run at the Grammy’s he’s this week’s presenter of a Grammy Themed 5.

It’s Grammy® season, and here are the two questions on everyone’s minds: 1) Will “A.K.A.,” the new standup album by Myq Kaplan (that’s me!) receive a nomination for Best Comedy Album (see #GramMYQ on social media)? And 2) Who is going to be bringing home the Best New Artist thingamabob? Thingama-what? Exactly. Bob. And while we wait to find out who wins, who better to share the Top 5 “Best New Artists Named Bob, Approximately,” than me, Myq Kaplan, aforementioned comedian Grammy® hopeful and Grade A son-of-a-Bob. (My dad’s name is Bob!) Now, check out these bad Bobs!

    1960: Bobby Darin!
#1 Bob! This year, Darin also won Record of the Year for “Mack the Knife,” a number 1 hit that sold 2 million copies AND got covered by my college a cappella group, VoiceMale. In addition to his singing career, he worked on the Democratic presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy (bonus Bob!).

    1961: Bob Newhart!
Back to back Bobs! Newhart’s album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, was the first comedy album to hit #1 on the Billboard charts (can’t spell “Billboard” without “Bob,” a slogan no one uses, but it’s available!). And though I am a comedian, neither I nor my college a cappella group has covered any of Newhart’s material.

    1962: Robert Goulet!
Triple Bobs! Let’s start a Bob-sled team! Goulet is, of course, most famous* for his acting role in The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, as well as uncredited roles on Boy Meets World, Mr. Belvedere, and The Simpsons while I was growing up. He probably also appeared in some musicals.

    1968: Bobbie Gentry!
This year, she rose to international fame with her “Ode to Billie Joe,” five years before that Green Day singer would even be born! How did she know? She also won Best Vocal Performance AND Best Contemporary Female Solo Vocal Performance, a much longer title. Congrats, Bobbie!

    2012: Bon Iver.
“Bon” looks close enough to “Bob,” right? Jkjkjkjk. One of Bon Iver’s members is named ROB Moose! According to Wikipedia, he contributed to their award-winning work that year, so we made it! These top 5 Bobs to win this award are actually the ONLY Bobs to ever win. Phew.

    Bonus almost-Bob honorable mention:
Baba Oje was a member and Spiritual Elder of Arrested Development, a group I love and the first hip-hop group to win this award, in 1993. Up until his death at 87 just a few years ago, he was known as the “oldest man in hip-hop,” and I’m happy to have learned that and to share it with you.

*most famous to ME for these.
