Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of September 21, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week, Conan makes you do the work, a late night host returns from his long hiatus and the Tonight Show rules the week with great comedy bookings.

After a weekend of football and awards shows, television is preparing for its new fall season. That includes a brand new week of hard-working late night hosts bringing us fresh comedy – variety shows. However, over at the Conan O’Brien Show, it’s his fans doing all the work.

Monday evening at 11pm on TBS, it’s the first edition of “DIY Conan.” Towards the end of the summer, Team Coco challenged viewers of Conan to a submission contest. The gang at Conan and TBS must have assumed that during these pandemic days, everyone has plenty of free time and that the country is just sitting at home. Under that assumption, Conan O’Brien gave the nation homework.

Conan asked his audience to recreate their favorite moments from “Conan” the talk show at home and submit them online for a chance to win the 2020 line of Conan Funko Pop! figures, some electronics, and a year’s supply of Snickers, among other things. Fans were also encouraged to use 2D, CG animated and stop-motion animation as their medium in their recreated moments from Conan.

Monday night will be the fruits of everyone else’s labors when Team Coco and TBS presents the first edition of “DIY Conan” where we’ll find out who won and which clips made it onto the show. Monday night is intended to be the first of many new “DIY Conan” shows in the future. After Monday evening, Conan goes back to new episodes this week with scheduled guests including a huge ratings get on Wednesday with former First Lady, Michelle Obama.

The other big late night news of the week is that fresh off of hosting the Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC, Jimmy Kimmel is back with brand new shows and ready to host Jimmy Kimmel Live again. JKL was placed in the very capable hands of some great guest hosts while Jimmy K. was gone for about 2 months.

Some of you might remember that Jimmy Kimmel decided to take a long summer vacay as the shit was hitting the fan for his appearances wearing black-face in the past. Those of you who don’t remember that, then great for Kimmel. That means his plan worked! Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Emmy Awards this past weekend and did an admirable job juggling tons of different virtual elements for an awards ceremony that couldn’t have a live audience, nominees or presenters all in the same place due to the Covid crisis.

Highlights on the late night schedule this week include James Corden having a musical co-host all week long on the Late Late Show on CBS. Alicia Keys will be performing each night this week on the Late Late Show to promote the release of her latest and 7th studio album, “Alicia.”

Tuesday, it’s a night for comedy duos in late night television. First up, Tenacious D will be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday on ABC. JB & KG are expected to perform on JKL. Then, Desus & Mero will be on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The combo of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero just wrapped up the second season of their late night series, “Desus & Mero” which airs on Showtime.

If you love late night comedy, then on Wednesday and Thursday nights, all you really need is the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Congratulations to the Fallon bookers on a great looking week. First on Wednesday, Jimmy Fallon welcomes one of the funniest people walking the Earth right now, Colin Quinn. It was announced that Colin Quinn will be doing a new and unconventional stand up comedy special for the new streaming service HBO Max.

Colin Quinn: Summer of 2020: A Drive-in Comedy Special” will test the boundaries of a traditional stand up specials. Colin will headline and direct the special which he will perform in a Brooklyn drive-in where fans can safely follow Covid guidelines by socially distancing in separate cars. The special will also be part documentary focusing on Quinn preparing to perform for an audience sitting at the wheel while they watch comedy.

Then on Thursday, Jimmy Fallon will be speaking to another legend remotely when he welcomes one of the all-time comedy greats, Chris Rock. However, there’s a lot more seriousness involved in Chris’ latest project. Chris Rock is top-billing the 4th edition of the FX anthology series “Fargo.” This season of “Fargo” takes place in Kansas City in 1950 and Chris Rock plays the head of crime syndicate which is experiencing an uneasy peace with a rival crime organization. Chris will be explaining all this to Jimmy Fallon on Thursday’s Tonight Show.

Friday night, Jason Schwartzman, who doesn’t do anything we don’t love, will be on the Late Late Show with James Corden to talk about his new project which we just talked about. Schwartzman will be starring opposite of Chris Rock in the new, 4th installment of “Fargo.” The first 2 episodes of “Fargo” premiere on Sunday, September 27th on FX starting at 9pm et.

Then on Saturday, SNL has its final rerun of the summer. The last of these repeats before the Saturday Night Live Season 46 Premiere is the highest rated episode of SNL in over decade. It’s last year’s Christmas episode hosted by the great Eddie Murphy with musical guest Lizzo. Murph brought back ratings to SNL which the show hadn’t seen since VP candidate Sarah Palin made an appearance on the show in 2008. Sorry, Mikey Pence, but it’s doubtful you could pull that off.

Speaking of which, the deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching in most states. You’ve already missed the deadline to be part of “DIY Conan“. Don’t make another mistake.
