Canadian comedy sets an Emmys record

Schitt’s Creek performed a clean sweep at the Emmys last night - scoping all seven comedy awards.

The Canadian show was named best comedy, and won the writing and directing awards too.

Eugene Levy and  Catherine O’Hara won for lead actor and actress, with Annie Murphy and series creator DanLevy – Eugene’s son – scooping the supporting actress and actor categories.

The show is also the to win all four comedy acting categories in a single year and is the most awarded comedy in a single year, when its two Creative Arts Emmys for casting and costumes, awarded last week, are added.

Paying tribute to Dan, Eugene Levy added: ‘I want to thank this young man who took our fish-out-of-water story and transformed it into a story of inclusivity, a castigation of homophobia, and a declaration of the power of love, so thank you Daniel.’

The show has just come to an end after six seasons.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won best variety talk series, following its trio of offscreen Creative Arts Emmys last week for writing, picture editing and technical direction.

And Succession, created by Peep Show’s Jesse Armstrong  took home the prize for best drama series, among others.

‘This is such a very nice moment,’ Armstrong said from London. ‘But it's sad not to be with the cast and crew to share it.’
