Seinfeld Joins Chuck Schumer on Stage at Gotham to Support Legislation to Help Comedy Clubs

New York Senator Chuck Schumer joined Jerry Seinfeld on stage at New York City’s Gotham Comedy Club to rally support for federal legislation that would support comedy clubs and other entertainment venues.

The Save our Stages Act seeks $10 billion in federal aid to help venues stay open. The funding would offer grants of up to $12 million to cover expenses incurred during the six month shutdown.

Over the summer, comedy and music clubs banded together to form the National Independent Venue Association to urge live entertainment fans to write to their senators to save our stages.

Since mid-March these venues have been forced to shut down due to Coronavirus mandates and there’s no end in sight to ban on large audiences. The clubs were the first venues in the city to be forced to shut down, and they will be last on the list to reopen.

From the stage, Jerry Seinfeld stressed the importance of comedy clubs to New York City. “It makes the city exciting to walk down the street and know right inside that door, some people are on stage and doing things. It gives the city energy and electricity,” he said.

Schumer also took a shot at performing some comedy, sort of. You can watch that below.
