Saturday Night Live: What’s Old and What’s New for Season 46 Return

This week, almost all your questions about the new season of Saturday Night Live have been answered.

Saturday Night Live returns LIVE on Saturday October 3rd for the Season 46 premiere. The cast will return to the studio for the first time since March 7, the last in-studio episode to air right before the Covid-19 shut downs.

The entire cast will be returning, nobody is retiring their SNL card just yet. Beck Bennett, Aidy Bryant, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Colin Jost, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd, Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Melissa Villaseñor, and Bowen Yang are all returning, although some castmembers working on other projects will be participating remotely. Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong will be green screened in for some parts of the upcoming season. So that’s new.

This week NBC confirmed that there will be a limited in studio audience on hand for the tapings, so that’s old. And for the first time ever, Michaels is planning to do at least 5 shows in a row, all live, back to back, to allow SNL to react to all the debates, the election, and have a halloween show. And Lorne is already thinking about the possibility of a delay in the election, in which case, he said they’ll be doing 6 or 7 live shows in a row. In other years, the show has always done a few weeks live and then taken a few hiatus weeks to avoid cast burnout.

Since SNL has been so happy having oldtimer Alec Baldwin join the recurring roster playing Trump, they’ve decided to go with a big celebrity to play opposite Baldwin as Presidential Candidate Joe Biden. Welcome aboard, Jim Carrey. Lorne Michaels told Vulture, “Maya Rudolph is coming back, and Alec [Baldwin] will be back. And I think Jim Carrey is going to do Biden. There was some interest on his part. And then we responded, obviously, positively. But it came down to discussions about what the take was. He and Colin Jost had a bunch of talks. He and I as well. He will give the part energy and strength, and … [Laughs.] Hopefully it’s funny.”

Three new castmembers are joining the team, as featured players. Lauren Holt, a UCB alum, Punkie Johnson, a stand up comedian who you saw on Comedy Central’s Bill Burr Presents The Ringers, and stand up comedian Andrew Dismukes, a JFL New Faces Alum (2017) who has been a Staff Writer since 2017.

On the writing side of things, Anna Drezen has been added to the head writer slot.

So the only question left up in the air seems to be…who is hosting and who will be the musical guest when SNL returns for Season 46?

See SNL when it returns on October 3rd.
