Felipe Esparza Brings His Stand Up to Netflix
Felipe Esparza is conquering comedy much in the way that comedians Jo Koy and Sebastian Maniscalco became giant stars- by home growing a devoted audience. And his new Netflix special, out now, is his next step to taking his brand worldwide.
He’s got all the expected credits for a star stand up– a win on Last Comic Standing, a list of tv credits, Tonight Show appearances and an HBO special on his roster. And now he’s debuting a Netflix special- which will almost certainly take his appeal next level, based on the tour he began immediately after releasing his HBO hour.
The new hour has a double debut- in English and in spanish. Felipe Esparza: Bad Decisions and Felipe Esparza: Malas Decisiones, just dropped on Netflix on Tuesday, September 1st. And its the first time a Netflix comedian has recorded a stand up special in two languages that are set to be released simultaneously. Filmed in Santa Ana, California as two separate performances, the new hour weaves through anecdotes of his childhood and mistakes made as an adult. Esparza’s comedy leans on his perspective on familiar and relatable material- growing up with ethnic parents and the culture clashes that inevitably ensue.
“I’m very excited for the release of my first Netflix original stand-up special. It’s my 3rd special, but the first time I’ll have one airing around the world,” Felipe told us. “I hope to bring my culture and experiences to a wider audience and with the Spanish special, I hope to bring the American style of stand-up to Spanish speaking comedy fans. Netflix has been a great partner in this, with Mark Ritchie and my wife Lesa ODaniel-Esparza executive producing. It’s been a great experience and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
