Could a Spinal Tap sequel be on the way?

Resolution in court battle over the rights

The door could be open for a This Is Spinal Tap sequel following a legal breakthrough.

A fractious four-year court battle between the creators of the comedy band – Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest – and  global media company Vivendi is said to have been resolved.

Shearer started the legal battle in 2016, alleging that in the 22 years since the cult film was released they had received just $81 in merchandising royalties and $98 from  musical sales.

The others later joined the lawsuit, which alleged dubious accounting practices, even fraud.

But now, in a report to a California judge revealed in The Hollywood Reporter, the two sides say they have reached agreement and will be drawing up new contracts.

It is thought likely the deal will give the creators greater rights to the Spinal Tap name, which could pave the way to a movie sequel.

The quartet previously settled with Universal Music over royalties from the Spinal Tap soundtrack.
