Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?
As we barrel our way through the last week of August and the unofficial end of summer, there’s one thing we can be sure of. Our late night talk show hosts are going to squeeze in some of their vacation weeks. All of the shows are on hiatus this week (and probably next), except for one lone late night warrior. Conan O’Brien.
And since Team Coco has this week to themselves when it comes to new shows, they are making the smart move of carbing up on comedy. Most of Conan O’Brien’s guests this week will be of the comedy- persuasion. Jason Sudeikis will be Conan’s guest on Monday night to talk about his new comedy show on Apple TV+ called “Ted Lasso.” Tuesday night, J.B. Smoove will be a virtual guest on Conan and he’ll be discussing his new sitcom “Mapleworth Murders” where he co-stars with Paula Pell on the new Quibi sitcom. More on that in a sec.
Then on Wednesday’s episode of Conan, Mr. Conan O’Brien will be interviewing one of his employees. No, not a writer or a producer. He’ll be speaking remotely with Rory Scovel. The popular comedian is going to work for Team Coco as the host of a brand new podcast produced by Conan O’Brien. The new podcast is called “Dads: The Podcast” hosted by Rory Scovel.
On each episode, Rory, along with co-host Ruthie Wyatt, will talk with different celebrities about the crazy challenges of fatherhood. And with so many comics sitting home during the shutdown, there’s sure to be no shortage of guests around 9 months from now. “Dads: The Podcast” launches Wednesday, September 2nd, and you can subscribe at TeamCoco.com/Podcasts.
That’s a look at Conan this week, but everybody else is in reruns. Stephen Colbert has put together a theme for his week of Late Show repeat episodes. Stephen will have a week of encore shows featuring a fellow late night show host as a guest.
Monday, Colbert has Conan O’Brien on his Late Show repeat where they compare notes. On Tuesday, it’s a Late Show encore featuring Stephen Colbert’s old boss, Jon Stewart, the former host of the Daily Show. The host of the Late Late Show, James Corden will be Colbert’s guest on Wednesday’s Late Show repeat. On Thursday, the current host of the Daily Show (which is pre-empted all this week BTW) Trevor Noah is on Colbert’s Best Of. And on Friday night, Stephen Colbert has a repeat with the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver.
Jimmy Fallon has Tonight Show reruns all week and he also has a theme to his repeats for most of this week. His common denominator is Saturday Night Live. Tuesday night, Jimmy Fallon is replaying an interview with long-time SNL writer, the legendary Paula Pell. She is finally stepping in front of the camera to star in her own show, “Mapleworth Murders” on Quibi which we mentioned earlier. Paula stars as Abigail Mapleworth in this comedy-parody of “Murder She Wrote.” Her character solves murders in her small town which certainly has more than its fair share of homicides.
Wednesday night, the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon will air a replay with guest Michael Che, one half of SNL‘s head writing team and half of the anchor team on Weekend Update. Both those teams are compromised of Michael Che and Colin Jost. Then on Friday’s Tonight Show repeat, Fallon’s guest will be a former SNL head writer, former Weekend Update anchorman and the current host of Late Night on NBC, Seth Meyers.
That takes us to the weekend where the actual Saturday Night Live will also be a repeat. The comedy variety series is set to premiere its new season on time at the end of September. It’s just that no one quite knows what that will look like in the Fall. This weekend’s SNL rerun will be hosted by the fabulous J-Lo, Jennifer Lopez with musical guest DaBaby.
