Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of August 17, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week the Presidential Election really speeds up. Well, “speed” is a relative term considering it’s two guys in their mid-70’s running against each other. But it does start to pick up steam with the start of the Democratic National Convention on Monday.

Here’s some programming notes. The network talk shows may be starting later than usual if coverage of the virtual DNC goes long. Which is a polite way of saying if the speeches get long-winded.

Also, the Daily Social Distancing Show with Trevor Noah on Comedy Central is extending to 45 minutes long from its regular half-hour format during the Democratic Convention this week as well as the Republican Convention next week. Plus, we’re getting an extra edition of the Daily Show on Friday this week for complete convention coverage.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be going live after your local news all this week and next, after CBS News’ coverage of the conventions. And Stephen will have a leading member of the Democratic Party as a guest each night this week when he goes live after the Dems’ convention.

On Monday, Stephen Colbert welcomes (remotely) former National Security Advisor & former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice who was one of Joe Biden’s leading contenders for his running mate. Tuesday night, Senator Elizabeth Warren joins Stephen Colbert live to talk about the convention. Then on Wednesday, Senator Bernie Sanders is a remote guest on the Late Show. Finally, Stephen Colbert finishes up his week of live shows and wraps his convention coverage with the Democrats’ last Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

With the next two weeks full of political news, our late night talk shows will be more concentrated on the election instead of comedy, so there’s fewer funny guests booked this week.

And while there’s only a few comedy guests booked this week, the comedians that are appearing in late night are all A-Listers. On Monday, the fantastic Tiffany Haddish returns to the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Tuesday night, Patton Oswalt is on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Then on Wednesday evening, comedy producer, writer, director and actor Tyler Perry is on the Tonight Show.

Thursday night, it’s SNL night on the NBC late night talk shows. First, former Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen is on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and then on Late Night with Seth Meyers, it’s the Godfather of the Saturday Night Live cast, Kenan Thompson sitting down for a remote interview with Seth.

Jimmy Kimmel has new shows this week with a couple of new guest hosts sitting in for him. On Monday and Tuesday, the Emmy Award nominated Kerry Washington from “Scandal” is handling hosting duties on JKL. Wednesday night, Broadway’s Ben Platt is the guest host. And on Thursday, Anthony Anderson from ABC’s “Black-ish” returns to the hosting chair. Anthony is the first of Jimmy Kimmel’s substitutes to get a return-engagement as guest host. Maybe when the pandemic is finally over, might there be room for a 12:30am et talk show starring Anthony Anderson on ABC!?

And on Saturday, SNL is replaying the mid-season premiere from last season. It’s an encore presentation of the SNL episode hosted by Adam Driver who’s one of the more popular recent hosts on Saturday Night Live. This episode originally aired on January 25, 2020 when everyone was still excited about this new decade. Of course, that’s before it all went to shit this year. The musical guest on Saturday’s SNL encore will be Halsey.

Enjoy all the comedy that late night has to offer this week. And all the political comedy happening before it!
