Fleabag stage show heads to Amazon Prime
Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s stage performance of Fleabag is to broadcast on Amazon Prime next month.
One of the dates in her sold-out West End run of 2019 was filmed by the National Theatre, and subsequently released in cinemas. Now it is to be made available to Amazon subscribers from June 12, as part of a tie-up with the National.
Three other stage shows are also included: Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; Cumberbatch’s version of Hamlet; and Ian McKellen On Stage, his reminiscence show available for fans to watch at home for the first time.
Amazon Prime executive Martin Backlund said: ‘The cream of UK acting talent so often started their career in theatre, and we want to shine a light on the incredible heritage we have here.’
And Lisa Burger, joint chief executive of the National Theatre, added: ‘Over 12 years of broadcasting British theatre into cinemas with NT Live, we have built up an incredible array of filmed productions. It is with enormous pride that we announce this new collaboration with Amazon to share four productions for audiences to enjoy across the UK and Ireland on Prime Video.
‘As theatre-makers continue to be impacted by the pandemic, this will also enable us to further support the artists behind the work. Audiences will have the best seat in the house for some of the most popular British productions of the last decade.’
Prime Video previously signed a deal with Soho Theatre - which developed Fleabag – to release more than 30 stand-up specials from comedians including Nish Kumar, Dane Baptiste and Jen Brister last December.
