The Filtered Excellence: November 6, 2020

Bob Geldof once asked “Where is the filtered excellence!?” It’s right here. Once a week we take a break from comedy to bring you this week’s picks of the best things to watch, the most interesting things to do, great things to try, the best picks to read, our favorite things to listen to and more.

    WATCH THIS

Moonbase 8. John C. Reily, Fred Armisen, and Tim Heidecker team up with director Jonathan Kristen for this new Showtime series. They play Cap, Skip and Rook, three astronauts living on a NASA Moon Base Simulator in the remote part of the Arizona desert. They all have their reasons for wanting to reach the Moon, but they must first overcome loneliness, self-doubt, professional limitations, and their trust in one another to get there. Having one of these actors could carry the show, but pairing them together is comedic gold. It’s great showcase for three fantastic talents. Moonbase 8 airs Sunday nights at 11pm East on Showtime.

Walter Winchell: The Power Of Gossip. Syndicated gossip columnist and news commentator Walter Winchell transformed news into a form of entertainment, pioneering a style that we see nightly as a matter of course. Incredibly at the time of his death in 1972, he was largely forgotten. Whoopi Goldberg narrates this American Masters look back at Winchell’s life, front his New York City upbringing, to his days as a vaudeville performer, to how he deftly balanced hard news and celebrity gossip to become one of the most read – and feared – columnists in the country. Winchell’s coverage of the Lindburgh baby kidnapped case and his denouncement of the rise of Nazi Germany cemented his star status led to him having the ear of President Roosevelt and Senator Joe McCarthy – relationships that would make and break him. But the doc it also shows how Winchell’s aggressive, take no prisoners approach would ultimately lay the groundwork for how today’s news is presented. With Stanley Tucci recreating some of Winchell’s most famous quotes and accounts from friends, family, friends and historians, this is multi-dimensional look back at a multi-media pioneer. Walter Winchell: The Power Of Gossip is available now at pbs.org.

All That You Can’t Leave Behind – 20th Anniversary Edition by U2. After spending the 90s incorporating electronic music into their sound, U2 got back to basics with the release of their 2000 effort, All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Anchored by the hit single, ‘Beautiful Day’, the album sold over 12 million copies worldwide and won 7 Grammy Awards. To coincide with the 20th Anniversary of its release, this new deluxe edition contains the original album, rarities, remixes and a full concert from the Fleet Center in Boston recorded on the Elevation tour. The outtakes really capture the band in this midst of another creative rebirth, while the live tracks show why U2 is one of the best bands to ever grace the stage. One of the band’s best albums just got better. All That You Can’t Leave Behind – The 20th Anniversary Edition by U2 is available now through Amazon and all major streaming outlets.

Hey Clockface/Armed Forces – The Deluxe Edition by Elvis Costello. The pandemic isn’t slowing down Elvis Costello. The 66 year old rock icon has just released a new studio album and overseen a deluxe edition of one of his most acclaimed works. Recorded in Helsinki, Paris, it moves from frenetic DIY rock, to introspective ballads, to songs that would’ve fit perfected during the Parisian Jazz Age of the 1920s. It’s Elvis Costello at his most eclectic and freewheeling, that yet again, showcases his remarkable songwriting skills. Released in 1979, Armed Forces saw Elvis Costello & The Attractions at the peak of the creative powers. It featured classic songs such as ‘Oliver’s Army’, ‘Accidents Will Happen’, ‘Green Shirt’, and (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding’ and put Costello in the pantheon as one of rock’s best songwriters. This new deluxe edition features a killer new mix of the original album, alternative versions, demos, outtakes and amazing live tracks from the tours to support the album. The band is absolutely on fire in studio and on stage, and this new package puts it all on full display. Hey Clockface and the deluxe edition of Armed Forces are available now through Amazon and all major streaming services.

New York City: Say Their Names. The number of Black and Brown people killed by police brutality – and the mass protests that followed it – dominated the news cycle for a significant part of 2020. The Public Theater will honor the fallen by turning the facade of their downtown location into a living memorial. Curated by Garlia Cornelia Jones and designed by Lucy Mackinnon, at least 2,000 names will projected onto the building, along with work by ten visual artists from various mediums. It’s a beautiful remembrance to those who lost their lives ugh too soon. Say Their Names will be at The Public Theater November 11th though December 5th.
