BBC buys American comedy Twenties

About an aspiring writer trying to make it in Hollywood

US comedy Twenties, about an aspiring young black lesbian writer, is coming to BBC iPlayer.

Created by Lena Waithe the show – which initially aired on Black Entertainment Television in the US earlier this year – stars Jonica T. Gibbs as Hattie,  who is down on her luck in Los Angeles when she lands a job as an assistant on a TV show.

Over the course of the series, she and her  two straight best friends, Marie (Christina Elmore) and Nia (Gabrielle Graham), try to find a their place in love and in their careers.

Sue Deeks, head of programme acquisition for the BBC, says: ‘With its distinctive style and engaging characters, Twenties takes a humorous and insightful look at balancing work, love and friendship whilst navigating the outwardly glamorous world of Hollywood.’

The first series of eight half-hour episodes will be coming to BBC Three on Sunday October 25. The BBC has also bought the rights to the second series, which has been commissioned but not expected to air in the US until next year.
