Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: September 5, 2020

Tonight, Saturday Night Live pays tribute to the star of Black Panther by airing an SNL repeat hosted by Chadwick Boseman.

The world was saddened and stunned when it was hit with the news that actor Chadwick Boseman had passed away on August 28th at the young age of 43. It’s hard to imagine which of those two emotions is going to last longer, the sadness or the shock. Chadwick played a variety of roles during his career which was cut short, but he filled it with an abundance of memorable performances. He’s known for playing significant historical figures in his movies including the first African-American Justice on the United States Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall in the film “Marshall“, the man who integrated Major League Baseball, Jackie Robinson in “42” and the Godfather of Soul, James Brown in “Get on Up.”

However it was the summer of 2018 that transformed Chadwick Boseman from an actor into a movie star. The two biggest box office blockbusters of ’18 belonged to Chadwick. With the release of “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” Chadwick Boseman sealed his legacy as a superhero. In both those hit movies, Chadwick played T’Challa the King of the fictional kingdom of Wakanda and the alter-ego of the Marvel Comics superhero, the Black Panther.

Chadwick Boseman became the hottest Hollywood star on the planet and that’s why he was asked to host tonight’s Saturday Night Live episode from SNL – Season 43 which originally aired on April 7, 2018. It would be the one and only time that Chadwick Boseman hosted Saturday Night Live. And it will be even more amazing to watch tonight, seeing the energy and joy Chadwick puts into hosting SNL and knowing now, at that time, he was already suffering from the disease that would claim his life two years later. It’s this episode of Saturday Night Live that NBC will air tonight at 11:30pm as a memorial to a man who inspired millions of little kids (and plenty of adult fans) when they finally saw a superhero that looked like them on the big screen.

This episode of Saturday Night Live opened like most do; with Alec Baldwin back to play President Donald Trump. The setting for the SNL Cold Open is a press conference with the leaders of the Baltic states, “Estonia, Lithuania and Stankonia,” according to Baldwin’s Trump. There’s also a certain someone special at the press conference as well who makes Donald Trump’s orange heart swoon. It’s the President of Russia, Macho Vlad Putin played by SNL cast member Beck Bennett.

After the introductions, dressed in style in an outfit that looks like a cross between the Joker and Cam Newton, Chadwick Boseman takes the stage to deliver his debut SNL monologue. Even though he’s excited to finally host Saturday Night Live, Chadwick feels bad that it happened 2 months after the release of “Black Panther.” Mainly because all the good “Wakanda” sketch ideas had already been done according to Chadwick. The host feels it’s not fair that Sterling Brown, who appeared in the opening scene of “Black Panther” already got to do a Wakanda sketch and he was killed off after the first few minutes of the film. Chadwick Boseman then proceeds to give out some “Black Panther” spoilers from the film.

The must-see sketch from tonight’s SNL tribute episode to Chadwick Boseman is the return of “Black Jeopardy.” Hosted by cast member Kenan Thompson, this may be the smartest, funniest SNL sketch from the past decade. Host Chadwick Boseman appears in the sketch as the Black Panther’s secret identity, T’Challa, the King of Wakanda. The laughs in this sketch are worth a vault of Vibranium. See “Black Panther” for the reference. The YouTube link of the “Black Jeopardy” sketch was everywhere on social media and on news sites after Chadwick Boseman’s death had been announced.

Other sketches in tonight’s repeat SNL include a scene where some adult Disney fans take a trip the Magic Kingdom and look into the Princess Castle’s Magic Mirror to see what kind of princess they really are. Things don’t go well when cast member Leslie Jones takes her turn looking in the mirror.

In this repeat SNL episode, Chadwick Boseman also plays a scientist who has found a way for men to get pregnant much to the chagrin of cast member Mikey Day who plays the world’s first pregnant man who didn’t think this all the way through. This evening’s host is also in a restaurant sketch where his singing quartet has a problem with the service, and he plays a fireman who explains to his captain that he has to leave the fire early. There’s also a sketch in tonight’s repeat that answers the question, are white movie fans who love “Black Panther” allowed to do the Wakanda salute!?

There are three SNL Shorts included with this evening’s SNL rerun. The first short is a commercial for the new updated board game, “The Game of Life: DACA Edition” where in an unfortunate roll of the dice you could end up a Dreamer baby in Trump’s America. The next short is a parody commercial for female couch potatoes called “Lady Nike Pro-Chiller Leggings” for women who like to relax to the extreme!

The third SNL Short of the evening is by far the best. It’s called “Aidy B & Cardi B” and it’s the story of SNL cast member Aidy Bryant who finally finds her confidence when she’s inspired by tonight’s musical guest Cardi B. Aidy no longer holds her tongue and she’s ready to confront everyone. In hindsight, this may have been a small part of the inspiration for Aidy Bryant’s Hulu comedy series “Shrill.” That is, the part that wasn’t already inspired by the book it’s based on, “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman” by Lindy West.

Weekend Update’s anchor team of Colin Jost and Michael Che have plenty to cover in this episode from 2018. Jost & Che cover topics including President Trump sending the National Guard to the Mexican border, Chinese exports, Trump’s new tariffs, Donald “Shade Queen” Trump’s attacks on Amazon, Stormy Daniels’ “60 Minutes” interview, new security at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, an injury at the Masters golf tournament, an Australian stabbing, feces on an NYC subway, whale singing, and Ramen Noodle Day.

Two great recurring Weekend Update characters stop by the news desk on tonight’s repeat episode. First, it’s cast member Alex Moffat as the robotic-like Facebook Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg to talk about testifying in front of Congress. Then it’s one of our all-time favorite characters, “Angel, Every Boxer’s Girlfriend From Every Movie About Boxing Ever” played by cast member Heidi Gardner. Tonight, Angel has some good news and some bad news. We hope her boyfriend Tommy isn’t fighting again.

We have the promos for tonight’s SNL repeat starring Chadwick Boseman below for you to enjoy. In the first promo, cast members Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat and Kenan Thompson welcome Chadwick to Saturday Night Live. Turns out that warm welcome is actually a plot to score some Vibranium from the Black Panther. Good luck with that.

In the next promo, host Chadwick Boseman is joined by musical guest Cardi B and cast member Leslie Jones who wants Chadwick “Black Panther” Boseman to be more excited in his promos. She’s also always wanted to direct. And we find out what the “B” in Cardi B stands for.

Tonight, Saturday Night Live pays tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman with a memorial replay of the SNL episode he hosted in 2018 with musical guest Cardi B. It begins this evening at 11:30pm et on NBC.
