Sam Jay Will Host Late Night Talk Show for HBO Max

HBO Gives Series Order To Weekly Late-Night Show From Comedian And Writer Sam Jay And Executive Producer Prentice Penny

New York City comedian and Saturday Night Live writer Sam Jay is about to see her celebrity take a major step forward as HBO announces she will host a weekly late night talk show for the network.

The series will debut in 2021 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Jay plans to cover the top trending topics in urban and world culture each week including race, politics, sexual identity, science, celebrity, religion, and more – and examines them from her unique and subversive point of view.

HBO announced the project as the UNTITLED SAM JAY PROJECT which may or may not actually be the title of the show.

Nina Rosenstein, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming made the announcement, saying “Sam is fiercely funny, provocative, and a complete original. Her comedy seamlessly glides between vulnerability and grit, and she always makes you see the world in a whole new way. Joining forces with Prentice to bring Sam’s talent to late-night is a perfect fit.”

Producer Penny Prentice (Insecure) said she is excited to be working with Sam Jay, who she described as smart, funny, irreverent, and boundary-pushing and someone who will “challenges all of us to think different and be better.”

Sam Jay has been doing all of those things in New York City for years now, taking the stage at clubs around the city while writing for biggest comedy show on television- Saturday Night Live. She’s tough as nails, suffers no bullshit, and she’s smart and funny. Her first one-hour comedy special, “Sam Jay: 3 in the Morning,” recently debuted on Netflix, and in 2018 her album “Donna’s Daughter” made our list of the top ten albums of the year (original and powerful, both words that describe Jay herself). Before that she had a Netflix 15 (minute special) and a Comedy Central 30.

Among her many list credits, Sam was named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch for 2018 and was named as one of the Comedy Central Comics To Watch in 2015. She has performed at comedy clubs and festivals around the world. She has written for The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, the MTV Movie & TV Awards, and the 2020 BET Awards.

The series will be executive produced by Sam Jay, Prentice Penny for A Penny For Your Thoughts, Chris Pollack (HBO’s “Pete Holmes: Faces and Sounds,” Netflix’s “Patton Oswalt: Talking for Clapping”), and David Martin and Kara Baker for Avalon. Alex Soler will also serve as co-executive producer for A Penny for Your Thoughts Entertainment.
